About Outdoor Gear Nerds

Honest, unsponsored gear reviews from two anglers who actually use the stuff.

Why We Started This

We started this because we were sick of watching influencers read ad copy in front of a campfire and call it a review.

Every "review" online seems to come from a paid partnership, a sponsored post, or someone who used a product for a weekend before mailing it back. We set out to cut through that. No script from a marketing team, no polished commercial, just two guys putting gear through real conditions and telling you exactly what happened, good or bad.

How We Got Here

Jeff started Burly Fishing on YouTube back in 2019, posting unboxing videos that connected with everyday anglers who were tired of watching pros fish gear they'd never buy themselves. In 2021, his best friend Paul joined in, and the channel became Aggressively Average Anglers, kayak fishing and gear reviews for freshwater species like bass, pike, bluegill, crappie, and perch.

The channel grew because the reviews were honest, not because they were flashy. That demand pushed us to launch a second channel, Outdoor Gear Nerds, focused entirely on unbiased gear testing. In July 2026, we built outdoorgearnerds.com to house every review we've ever done in one place, permanently, since YouTube buries old videos and gear questions don't expire.

How We Keep It Honest

About half the gear we test is sent to us by brands. We're not millionaires, and we can't buy everything ourselves. But every brand agrees to the same deal going in: we provide an open and honest review in exchange for the product, nothing more. No favoritism, no cash for good scores, ever.

We tell every brand upfront: if you don't believe in your product, don't send it to us. We've run it this way since 2020, and we show you everything the testing turns up, even when it isn't flattering.

Jeff

Jeff is a self-taught angler with 15 years on the water, no mentor, no guide, just years of trial and error figuring it out himself. He grew up camping and hiking, so the outdoors were never a hobby he picked up later in life, they were just always there. Before fishing became his full time work, he spent 15 years in the fitness industry, including six years running his own gym, where his job was teaching coaches and business owners how to sell honestly instead of pushing people into things they didn't need. That same instinct, tell people the truth even when a sale is on the line, is exactly what he brought into this business. Jeff married his high school sweetheart in 2009, and the two of them are raising two daughters together.

Paul

Paul has also been fishing for 15 years, self-taught like Jeff, and bought his first fishing kayak in 2014, which is what pulled him fully into the kayak fishing world. He's been camping, hiking, backpacking, and hunting since high school, so testing gear in rough conditions isn't a job for him, it's just how he's always spent his time outside. He's a lifelong outdoorsman first and a reviewer second, and if a product claims to be tough, he's the one who wants to go find its breaking point. Paul is married and a father of two.

How We Review Gear

Every product we test gets used for 90 days or more, in the toughest conditions we can put it through. Not a weekend, not a controlled backyard test: real use, real weather, real abuse. We score every product across four categories, each rated 0 to 10.

Design

Is it well thought out? Does it bring anything new to the table? Is the layout and build functional, and does it feel high quality?

Performance

Does it do what it claims? Does it work well on its own and against similar products? Does it hold up over repeated use?

Durability

Is it built to last? What happens when we treat it poorly? Did we manage to damage it during testing?

Value

Is it worth the price tag? How does it compare to similar products at similar prices? What do you actually get for what you pay?
